The competition for press photographers throughout the country attracted over 1000 individual entries and many thousands of photographs. Britain’s finest press photographers show off their skills and compete with each other in eight categories in the main awards and a further five categories in the Olympics section The photos were judged by picture editors from national and regional newspapers and international news agencies who use their experienced eye to decide the winners in categories of sport, news, celebrity and business with a section for regional photographers.
The competition which this year added a section to recognize the fantastic summer Olympics also had an opportunity for the public to compete in the BT Spirit of the Olympics competition. The Olympics produced a bounty of fantastic photography and newspaper picture desks were handling thousands of pictures each day. On some days newspaper picture desks were handling aound 70,000 (seventy thousand ) pictures per day many of which were from professional photographers at Olympic events and venues around the country.
