Today: The Picture Editors’ Guild 2012 Awards Ceremony

Picking up other prizes at the Picture Editors’ Guild fourth annual Awards, joint-presented by London’s Mayor Boris Johnson,
and hosted by the BBC’s Kate Silverton, were:

Photobox Regional Photographer of the Year, Charles McQuillan, Pacemaker Press.
British Airways Olympic Sports Photographer, Owen Humphreys, Press Association.
British Airways Olympic News Photographer, Karwai Tang, Alpha Press.
British Airways Olympic Photo Essay, Mark Pain, Mail on Sunday.
British Airways Paralympics Sports Photographer, Adrian Dennis, AFP.
British Airways Paralympics Photo Essay, Mark Pain, Mail on Sunday who is also overall British Airways Olympic Photographer for his achievements.

Chairman of the judges, David Ofield of the Evening Standard, said:”There were many great pictures from all sectors of the
press — making it a tough task to select all our category winners. However, Jason’s essay was just so powerful that it clinched
our decision.”


“The highly-acclaimed Picture Editors’ Guild Awards, established as a premier annual event recognising and rewarding the talent and skill of Britain’s press photographers, is bigger and better for 2012.”
Alan Sparrow, UK Picture Editors’ Guild chairman, said: “The Awards have got better each year.
I believe they are now the ultimate test and celebration of British press photography – the most dynamic and competitive media workplace in the world.”

The Guild’s awards ceremony will be held this evening at the HQ of the Honourable Artillery Company in London and will be hosted by TV star and fellow journalist Kate Silverton.

The photographs above were taken by two of the thirty two photographers nominated as finalist in this years UK Picture Editor’s Guild awards competition. The overall winner of which is given the accolade the SABMiller Press Photographer of the year, the top award in British photo journalism.
The competition for press photographers throughout the country attracted over 1000 individual entries and many thousands of photographs. Britain’s finest press photographers show off their skills and compete with each other in eight categories in the main awards and a further five categories in the Olympics section The photos were judged by picture editors from national and regional newspapers and international news agencies who use their experienced eye to decide the winners in categories of sport, news, celebrity and business with a section for regional photographers.
The competition which this year added a section to recognize the fantastic summer Olympics also had an opportunity for the public to compete in the BT Spirit of the Olympics competition. The Olympics produced a bounty of fantastic photography and newspaper picture desks were handling thousands of pictures each day. On some days newspaper picture desks were handling aound 70,000 (seventy thousand ) pictures per day many of which were from professional photographers at Olympic events and venues around the country.
The Guild’s awards ceremony will be held this evening at the HQ of the Honourable Artillery Company in London and will be hosted by TV star and fellow journalist Kate Silverton.
