The Kobal Collection and The Art Archive have been ‘passed’ to Rex/Shutterstock

UPDATE: 13 July 2018: Once Rex London had seen this comment on PAN they were straight onto the contributor which was then followed by a note to PAN on the situation from Rex owner Shutterstock in New York who told us :

To clarify, when Shutterstock acquired The Art Archive collection, the team attempted outreach to all contributors involved, including Denis Cochrane. However, we did not receive a response from Mr. Cochrane. Consequently, since the acquisition of The Art Archive, Shutterstock has not published or licensed any of Mr. Cochrane’s images. In light of his outreach via email today, our team is now in contact with Mr. Cochrane directly.

UPDATE: 12 July 2018: I spotted a new comment on this 2016 news post this week (published in full in the comments box below) – if someone at Rex/Shutterstock wants to reply? I have the customers email address if you would like me to connect you but, hey, you should have that on record right?

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have not heard from you for quite a long time now – well over a year – and wonder if my Titanic items are no longer used. I note that you have changed hands and are now part of Rex/Shutterstock

The last amount paid was on 23 January 2017: £87.93.  Maybe something has gone wrong as I was, prior to the last entry, being paid sums on a fairly regular basis.

If you could kindly let me know I would be most grateful.  The account ref.is PO32 and my account is 10613860.

Good Wishes,

DC

UPDATE 6 Sept 2016: Shutterstock just confirmed they acquired ‘over 700,000 iconic images’ from the The Art Archive and The Kobal Collection’.

1 Sept 2016: Two major historical image collections the specialist film stills stock library The Kobal Collection and the specialist art, civilization and history library the Art Archive have been ‘passed’ to Shutterstock.
In an email to photo desks sent on to PAN they say:
“After over 30 years in the international image licensing business, The Picture Desk directors have decided that the time has come for our specialist image libraries, The Kobal Collection and The Art Archive, to be passed to the next generation of picture professionals. Our number one choice of new owner is Shutterstock, a leading provider of quality images around the world.”
• As of 1 September 2016, the libraries websites will be re-routed automatically to REX by Shutterstock.

Industry reaction:
Tom Houghton (@TomHoughton_) a picture researcher twitted on the news: ‘Just seen the news @KobalCollection & @TheArtArchive, sorry to see you go – wishing you guys all the best for the future’.
