Last Day: UK Picture Editors’ Guild – Olympics Photo Award Categories

Olympics categories are open for new entrants: closing date for entries: 26th September 2012

AN OLYMPIC CHALLENGE FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS FROM BT AND BRITISH AIRWAYS
The highly-acclaimed Picture Editors’ Guild Awards, established as a premier annual event recognising and rewarding the talent and skill of Britain’s press photographers, is bigger and better for 2012.
This year the awards will include a category dedicated to the London 2012 Games.

This new Olympic challenge to the country’s photographers offers a prize contest to produce the best images of the London 2012 Games.
Backed by BT and British Airways, the UK Picture Editors’ Guild Olympic Awards, will be a dedicated competition to find gold-winning pictures and create a lasting visual legacy of the Games.
Split between a series of categories for professional photographers sponsored by British Airways and the BT Spirit of the Olympics amateurs-only section, the Awards will be run by the Guild as a one-off addition to its own established annual Press contest.
The Guild will use the same unique judging system – panels of national media picture editors – to select the top entrants to join a presentation ceremony later this year. Press photographers will be battling for five British Airways titles: Olympics Sports Photographer, Olympics News Photographer, Olympics Essay Photographer, Paralympic Photo Essay, and Paralympic Sports Photo of the Games. For the nation’s amateur camera enthusiasts, the BT Spirit of the Olympics section invites entries of between one and six images with an Olympic theme taken anywhere the Games are being celebrated.
Closing date follows the last day of the Paralympics in September.
The Press categories are only open to professional photographers but not just those accredited to the Games – the most gripping pictures may well be taken far from the Olympic Park.
Prizes will match those of the annual Guild Awards. Winners of both competitions will be revealed at the gala evening held in the City of London on 8th November. Competition to be the winner of BT Spirit of the Olympics is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Along with the title, BT are offering a year’s free broadband, camera equipment worth £500 and a year’s subscription to the leading magazine Amateur Photographer.
What makes the Awards distinctive is that a panels of judges, consisting only of experienced picture editors, independently assess the images as they would in their own work environment, with David Ofield of the Evening Standard, taking on the role of chairman of judges.
