World Press Photo has launched a new website as a step forward in its strategy to invest in online initiatives to fulfill its mission. Under the motto: ?We exist to inspire understanding of the world through quality photojournalism?, the new site is designed to showcase the award-winning photography in a wider context than before, and also to provide a platform for educational resources and publishing activities under the new Academy section.
Managing director Michiel Munneke: ?The new website enables World Press Photo to expand on its mission to advance and support photojournalism and to promote the free exchange of information. Through this website, we hope to engage photographers more strongly and serve new audiences around the world.? The website is accessible at www.worldpressphoto.org.
In the Gallery section, prize-winning photography takes center stage with a detailed context page for each image, which includes information such as caption information in six languages, a map showing the location where the photograph was taken, technical information, related links, interviews with the photographer and more. The galleries also provide access to the photographer profile pages, which is intended to grow into a network resource.
The website also presents more opportunity for visitors to actively engage with the content through features such as a library of embeddable videos of talks and lectures as part of the expanding Academy initiatives for advancing and supporting photojournalism and photojournalists in their work. In the Events section, there is also expanded exhibition information and campaign tools for exhibitions such as banners and eCard invitations.
