PAN spotted some great newspaper usage from London based sports photo agency Offside’s coverage of the pre-match ‘celebrations’ during last weeks meeting of 1FC Köln and Arsenal – agency owner Mark Leech sent us these images, the usages and a report:
The word was out. 1FC Köln were bringing twenty thousand fans to London for their first European match in 25 years, everyone knew this. Well everyone except the Met Police and Arsenal FC apparently.
Marc Atkins was our designated photographer to cover the match at the Emirates Stadium that evening but as our office is based in Islington, it seemed a good idea to check out what was happening early afternoon.
To be honest I headed to Highbury & Islington station, carrying a Canon 5D MkIII and 24mm lens, with a view to taking the Victoria line to Oxford Circus. There was no need to go underground as the whole of Highbury Corner was gridlocked as the Germans were all over the manor. Fousands of ‘em.
I moved amongst the good natured but heavily refreshed supporters and made some interesting pictures, getting close with my prime 24mm rather than zooming in. The pictures started getting very interesting and I was without a laptop, so arranged to meet Marc at the Emirates at 4pm. He uploaded the card and began transmitting from outside the stadium media entrance and these were happily received by online newspaper desks.
Marc then continued to make more pictures of the invasion of the Emirates Stadium as the reality of 20,000 supporters with a 3,000 ticket allocation hit home. He shot most of his pictures on a Canon 1Dx with a 70-200.
