German Press Agency dpa honoured its best pictures of the year – 2021- this week, Here are some of the winners.
Photographer Georg Wendt won the News category. His photo (above) shows the then Chancellor Angela Merkel in the Marlow bird park with Australian lorikeets.
The picture attracted attention worldwide and found its way into numerous leading national and international media.
First place in each of the other categories was taken by: Uli Deck with a dog swimming photo (below) and the high-performance computer HoreKa, Marijan Murat with the crying Olympian Annika Schleu and Sven Hoppe with the fairy tale ballet Cinderella (Arts & entertainment) (Below). In the story category, Boris Roessler prevailed with pictures of the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley. 49 photographers submitted a total of around 450 photos from Germany and abroad as well as almost 40 stories.
Photos Editor-in-Chief at dpa Peer Grimm said, “I would like to thank all photographers for their daily commitment – often under difficult conditions such as in crisis situations or during demonstrations and natural disasters. You all contribute to our society continuing to be independent and free about the events of the world can be informed.”
An international jury of experts decided on the winning motifs:

- Uta daughter man, Agence France-Press (AFP), Chief Editor for AFP Photo Germany and Northeastern Europe
