New bursary launched in memory of Photographer and Picture Editor Eamonn McCabe

A new photo bursary has been launched by the Royal Photographic Society and The Guardian in memory of photographer and picture editor Eamonn McCabe.

Eamonn McCabe (1948-2022)  created some of the best known images from the 1970s to 2020s. Starting as a sports photographer, he later moved in to more general editorial work and portraiture, and as a picture editor for the Guardian. Largely self-taught McCabe was widely respected across the industry.  He produced a number of books and television programmes about photography.

In 2024 the bursary will provide £3000 to a photographer aged 25 years or under to deliver a photography project responding to the theme of ‘sporting endeavour’. This can be interpreted as widely as the applicant wishes, but the general approach should be editorial, suitable for publication. The project should normally be new, not previously exhibited or published.

The completed project will be published by The Guardian and the RPS and they will work with the successful applicant in bringing their project to a wider audience.

Eamonn’s wife Rebecca told PAN: “The bursary will provide an annual prize to help an aspiring young photographer onto the career ladder. Eamonn was always happy to listen, advise and steer any new press photographer in his role as Picture Editor. I am so happy this bursary will keep that enthusiasm alive.”

  • This is a fantastic initiative in memory of Eamonn. He did so much to help and encourage young photographers and picture editors for which I, and I am sure many others, are truly grateful.
