First look: New book ‘FIFTY’ – Mary Evans Picture Library + open day pics

Updated article: 30 June 2014
Paul Brown, MD at Mary Evans sent these images from the 50th Anniversary Open Day at the library on 26th June – Paul told PAN: ‘A really successful day. People really enjoyed seeing the library and so many people said the same thing; “we never knew you had that!” A chance to meet contributors in person was also a great success.’
It was great meeting so many old friends and people who have been associated with the library for our fifty years and reminiscing about old times. Plenty of food and drink was on hand and the atmosphere of the library combined with that to make it a wonderful day.’

In the post this week: a copy of the new ‘limited edition’ book Fifty from Mary Evans picture library in London which celebrates it’s 50th year in the photo library business this year …all year!
FIFTY is a modest and very personal walk through the vast pictorial gems held at the Mary Evans HQ in Blackheath London. The book reads like a story book explaining how certain collections came about and concentrates on both the core collections and the more unusual. Lots of the imagery in the archives were amassed by a particular interest the founders Mary and Hilary Evans had, ‘As collectors, principally, of ephemera and works on paper, Mary and Hillary’s vision for the library did not encompass what might be thought of as fine art. Instead, the images they collected documented and illustrated, in an extraordinary way, everyday life lived by ordinary people.’

This is the best book PAN has read on the stock photo business in a while, it packs a precise record of how a picture library was created fifty years ago and how it still runs to the same successful principals today. A great advert for the industry. Congratulations to the team at Mary Evans for putting it together …and posting one to us!

• FIFTY will be given out at a series of events being held at the photo library’s home in Blackheath throughout 2014 – Look out for your invite!
