During the 1980’s The Tape/Slide Newsreel Group or Tape/Slide Project was an adult education project that met in the basement of the Rio Cinema in Dalston, East London.
A tutor, Sandra Hooper, came to teach young, mostly unemployed, local people photography and sound recording skills and sent them out to report on Hackney life. The results were shown on the big screen before the main block-buster feature, bringing Hackney stories chosen and interpreted by Hackney residents to over 1000 cinema-goers a week.
The 12,000 images were discovered in a basement in 2016 and is now available for licensing for the first time from photo library Topfoto.
