Photo Archive book: Summer of 1937: Lee Miller/Roland Penrose

‘Summer OF 1937‘ cover and inside.

The Lee Miller Archives – view their PAN listing – has published ‘Summer of 1937: Lee Miller/Roland Penrose’, a facsimile of Lee Miller & Roland Penrose’s photograph albums of their 1937 summer holiday with their friends Man Ray, Picasso, Leonora Carrington, Nusch Eluard, Max Ernst, and more.

The holiday, portrayed in the feature film LEE, demonstrates the freedom and friendship of these artists as WW2 looms on the horizon. The images within see this group of artists travel from Cornwall to the south coast of France in what could be named ‘the summer of love’ for Lee Miller and Roland Penrose, who had recently met for the first time; this was the beginning of a relationship that would last for the rest of their lives.

Published on the anniversary of Lee Miller’s birth, ‘Summer of 1937: Lee Miller/Roland Penrose’ is available to purchase now.
