If you didn’t make it to the German photo licensing industry’s PICTAday event this year on the 18th April in Berlin …here’s what happened accompanied by a few images shot by Frank May from picture alliance above and below.
Organised by the German photo agency trade body BVPA the PICTday event was again packed with content buyers from the publishing, film and creative industries as well as public institutions and NGOs …“Nowhere else can we find relevant image customers for our licensing business in such a concentrated manner in one day,” said an exhibiting agency representative.
In addition to insights into the new portfolios and services of the exhibiting photo agencies and tech service providers, the event also offered eight exclusive lectures on the current industry subjects throughout the day and featured accompanying side events by akg, IMAGO and ullstein bild.
Fact checks, modern image procurement, AI workflows and Google’s licensing badge were on the agenda, opt-out against data scraping, author naming and the social media image license. Omnipresent in the discussions at the trade fair was the question of the effects of generative AI on the photography industry. There is urgent interest in the legal assessment of AI training, the opportunities of package licensing to AI companies and the discussions about an international labeling standard for AI-generated images.
With a packed conference program visitors were please to relax at the barista stand, sponsored by IMAGO, and a cozy lounge area, sponsored by the dpa picture alliance.
The BVPA reported to PAN the event had a ‘positive mood’. The next PICTAday will take place in Hamburg in April 2025 …date will be announced shortly.
