Picture Editor Ray Wells and the Sunday Times photo desk depart the newspaper

This Sunday’s edition of the Sunday Times newspaper in the UK will be the last for the news photo desk on the paper headed up for 31 years by Photo Editor Ray Wells.

From what we hear the changes are due to a merging of The Times and Sunday Times News picture desks. Looks like the The Times photo desk will be running a combined desk as a seven day operation. The Sunday Times magazines and supplements picture operation (for The Mag, Style, Culture, Home and Travel) is currently unaffected by the merger and will continue as before.

PAN reached out to the comms people at News UK, the paper owner, earlier this week on hearing the news …nothing back so far.

Also leaving the Sunday Times picture desk are Deputy Photo Editor Kevin Hayes who has been with the paper 26 years, Senior Picture Researcher Annabelle Whitestone , Digital Picture Editor Ben Williamson and Picture Desk Manager Denise Brackell.

A ‘socially distanced’ leaving drinks do is planned for early September …will let you know if we get the party pics!

The Sunday Times photo desk tweeted this fantastic image of the desk in the 1990’s saying: “Today we say goodbye to some much loved colleagues. The great Ray Wells, Sunday Times Picture Editor, departs after 31 years.”

After seven years there he joined Fleet Street News Agency as Picture Editor for 18 months before joining the Mail on Sunday under the legendary Gary Woodhouse. Night shifts on the Observer and elsewhere eventually lead him in 1989 to The Times then edited by Charlie Wilson. After two years he was recruited to The Sunday Times as Deputy to Aidan Sullivan, upon whose departure he became Picture Editor and contributing photographer for the next 25 years, remaining at News UK until late 2020.
