We are delighted to be able to let you see the shortlist for the Awards from the UK Picture Editors Guild in Association with Shutterstock. Congratulations to all those who made it through, and good luck!
Hundreds of photographers submitted thousands of pictures that were judged by ten experienced judges over many hours of deliberation.
Paul Jarrett, Secretary of the Wire Photo Association and Chair of the judges said “my most important task was to create a judging panel from all areas of our great industry. I was able to draw from a pool of editorial expertise in the fields of national newspapers, regional newspapers, international photographic agencies and the online world. I believe my team have done justice to all the photographers and video journalists who have entered some of the most diverse and truly extraordinary images in all the category’s which we were asked to scrutinise.
Sadly 2017 produced some of the most harrowing events in the UK and worldwide which allowed photographers to show case their talents to the full, for that alone you all should be very proud’’.
Matt Phelvin, Senior Manager, Picture Editing at Rex/Shutterstock said “2017 was such a major news year in the UK, including the fallout from the Brexit vote, multiple terror attacks, the Grenfell Tower fire, the list goes on. In the age of camera phones and citizen journalism the market is saturated with imagery, but this competition shows how the pros are on another level. When it comes to capturing these major events you need a great eye for a picture and the technical ability to capture the moment under difficult circumstances.”
The most strongly contested category was the Canon Sports Photographer of the Year, Rob Bodman from AFP said “the highest number of entries in all the categories, and the quality of the sports photographers is, without doubt, outstanding. There were some stunning images in many of these entries, making this one of the most enjoyable, but also trickiest categories to pick winners from.’’
New to the awards this year was the Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year and the work was “impressive with a fine attention to detail” remarked one of the judges.
Matthew Butson, Vice President, Hulton Archive Getty Images said “My top pick here was based on technical and compositional merit – as a student still learning ones trade, the ability to tick both boxes certainly is key”.
Dave Muir, of Mirror online said of the National Newspaper entry “From terror attacks to natural disasters and the features and stories that appear in our papers daily, press photographers are still able to sum up stories with one powerful image”.
