UK Picture Editors’ Guild Awards – Judges Announced

Sophie Batterbury has been asked to be Chair of the Judges for this year’s UK Picture Editors Awards.

Sophie Batterbury is currently Head of Pictures at Independent Newspapers where her responsibilities cover The Independent, The Independent on Sunday and ‘ I ‘ .
Her career in photojournalism began in The Independent darkroom the week the Berlin Wall came down. Ever since that momentous week the newsroom has held her attention in one way or another. Over the years she has held various roles across all Independent titles. She is very honoured to have been made a Fellow of the RPS this year and is currently Chair of the Visual Communication Advisory Board at Ravensbourne College.

Among the other judges recruited by Sophie is Guardian Picture Editor Fiona Shields with over twenty years’ picture editing experience across a range of newspaper titles.
Fiona has been picture editor of the Guardian for the last seven years and has been involved in the coverage of some of the most historic stories of our time.

The distinguished body of judges includes new Guild member Keren Sachs.
Keren is the Director of Content Development for Shutterstock, where she leads the curatorial direction for the new high-end image licensing brand, Offset. Keren has spent her career working across the photo industry. After serving as the Photo Editor for National Geographic Kids, Keren went on to work for The Wall Street Journal, Corbis and Williams-Sonoma. She was the Director of Photography for Martha Stewart Living Merchandise where she worked with an array of talented photographers, many of whom she later partnered with at Pottery Barn Kids. Today, she continues to work with artists from around the world, helping them to create and license imagery.

Also in the judge’s line up is former picture editor for the Sunday Express Jane Sherwood, who chaired the judges last year and was delighted to be asked again this year. Jon Mills another of last year’s judges brings his experience to bear to the judging process. New to the process is on-line photo editor for the Evening Standard Gareth Richman . He joins Guild awards veterans Bryn Colton of Bloomberg and Mike Sharp, deputy chairman of the UK Picture Editors Guild and David Leverton. Bringing a wealth of experience Picture Editor of the Sunday Times Ray Wells. The judges will take the next ten days to deliberate and those shortlisted will be informed soon after the judge’s deliberations
