PAN friend Paul Roberts, Academic Course Leader: Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the University of Gloucestershire, has sent PAN his winning student’s images from the The Tom Stoddard Award 2021. Congrats to all!
The annual competition for students of BA (Hons) Photojournalism and Documentary Photography, recognises and encourages new photojournalistic and documentary photography talent at the University of Gloucestershire.
Known for his distinctive black and white pictures, Tom Stoddart has documented key moments in history from the fall of the Berlin Wall to the World Trade Centre attacks. Firmly established as one of the worlds most respected photographers, he has lent his name to The Tom Stoddart Photojournalism Award at the University of Gloucestershire for the last two years
The award winners were chosen by Tom personally from shortlisted entries and announced this week. Canon, who are supporting the award have donated a Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 A3 Plus Photo Printer for the winner.
The winner of this years competition is Ranni Samuda, 25, from Gloucester. Ranni submitted a portrait (above) of a protestor taken during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests in London.
Tom Stoddart said of the image, “This is a really strong portrait highlighting one of the most important issues of the day. The framing has produced an intensely personal portrait of this young man taking part in a Black Lives Matter protest held in London during June 2020”.
Also placed in the competition were:
2nd Emily Hutchinson, 22 with a portrait of, ‘Seth’ in his bedroom during the first Coronavirus lockdown.
And two joint third placed winners –
3rd Narra Fortin with an image of a man sleeping on a bench in deserted streets during the first pandemic lockdown in Lisbon Portugal
3rd James Bleasdale with an image of a man making his way through Huddersfield during the first UK lockdown in April 2020.
Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Course Leader, Paul Roberts said:
“This award gives students the opportunity to have their work scrutinised by one of the most renowned photojournalists in the UK, our hope is that this will inspire them to achieve their aims to become practicing photojournalist at a time when the world desperately needs photographers to document the truth of the world.”
