Upon realizing that we are living among the last generation of German concentration camp survivors,
VII photographer Maciek Nabrdalik set out not just to capture their portraits but to talk with them, to ask them questions and through their wisdom, gain a better understanding of the human scale of an enormous historical atrocity. While there are institutions that record the accounts of concentration camp survivors with great diligence, Nabrdalik’s goal has been to gather the complex experiences of these survivors – their reflections, feelings, and understandings of what they suffered – because, as they have told him over and over again, one remains a prisoner until the end of one’s life.
