SWNS proudly brings the heartbeat of Britain to life for our biggest news brands. Every day, hundreds of our stories, images and videos are published and broadcast across the national media.

How do we do it? With a team of dedicated journalists, photographers, videographers and editors based across the UK who are passionate about real, original journalism.
We combine traditional reporting with the best content-gathering techniques for digital and social media to produce a news wire that drives millions of views every day.

It’s all in there – breaking news, court cases, amazing human interest stories, consumer issues, health studies, scientific breakthroughs, stunning imagery and viral videos. Our clients are the biggest news publishers in the world – from the Sun, Mirror and Daily Mail to the Times, Telegraph and New York Post.

Who we’re looking for:

For decades SWNS has been one of the largest suppliers of original news content to the UK’s biggest publishers.
As the media landscape evolves we’re building to stay at the front and we’re looking for a picture editor with a specific brief to work with our online publisher clients.

We’re looking for someone who is motivated to grasp this challenge and bring new ideas to solve it.

The job on offer is for a full-time, permanent, news photography specialist with a passion for visual storytelling and a love of news in all its aspects.

At different times you’ll be doing the full gamut of picture desk jobs, from ideation, to briefing photographers, image processing, licensing, quality control, captioning, distributing and verification.

You’ll be in regular, constant contact with our reporting team, our staff photographers, our customers’ picture desks and many people besides – this is definitely a job for someone who is good at communicating.

All applicants will ideally have:

The specific responsibility of our chosen applicant will be to help build on our success providing news to online publishers, so we want someone with that experience on their CV.
We’ll either employ someone with more than two years working at a national online news website or someone who can demonstrate a comparable skillset.

The right applicant will have a broad knowledge of photo software, file types and web based platforms.

While IT skills are not our priority you’ll need to know, for example what to do with a .heic file or how to recognise a manipulated image.

You’ll need a good working knowledge of the legal issues around news photography including GDPR, copyright, libel, contempt as well as familiarity with the IPSO code of conduct.

A good understanding of how to use social media is also a prerequisite.

Salary, benefits and application:

Salary will be competitive and will depend on upon experience.

Our physical picture desk location is Bristol and we have an office in London. We are currently doing a mixture of work from home and work in the office – we’ll consider any request for where to work from the right candidate.

Weekend and bank holiday overtime will be paid and we have an employee benefits program.
