StormStock photo agency owner and photographer Martin Lisius has highlighted his favorite lenses over a lifetime of shooting weather footage, PAN asked him to expand on why these two have been his stable go-to’s:
Two Lenses, Generations Apart, Still Inspiring
Two of my favorite lenses sit at opposite ends of the photographic timeline: the vintage Asahi Super-Takumar 50mm f/1.4 and the modern ZEISS Milvus 18mm f/2.8. Both are part of our toolkit at StormStock, where we capture weather for film and television productions. There’s something especially satisfying about holding the little Takumar—a reminder of how much craftsmanship can fit into a simple, compact tool. Beside it, the Milvus offers a much wider view, suited to the enormous scale of the skies we photograph. Different generations, different perspectives, and both a joy to work with.
Weather cinematography demands patience, preparation, and an appreciation for light that may last only seconds. Choosing a lens is part of deciding how to tell that story: whether to draw attention to a detail or give the audience room to take in an entire storm. Technical performance matters, but so does the experience of working with a tool that makes you want to pick up the camera. That’s what these two lenses do for me. After decades behind the camera, I still value that feeling.
