Nature Picture Library is celebrating World Ranger Day – July 31 – which honours the vital work of rangers protecting vulnerable species and raises awareness of the risks they face. …they explain more here:
Why this matters:
A passive-aggressive email or a pressing deadline might be the typical challenges we face in our working week, whereas rangers face threats from wildlife and criminals to remote accidents and mental strain. Their work is physically extreme, mentally taxing, and often deadly!
In 15 years, more than 2,351 rangers have been killed protecting wildlife, with around 150 deaths every year.
- ~40% result from violence — poachers, militias, or organized crime
- ~60% are due to illness, wildlife attacks, work incidents, and suicide linked to work-related isolation
The International Ranger Federation is calling for systemic reforms: better recognition, conditions, gear, training, and insurance.
Despite the challenges, rangers are more willing than ever to protect wildlife. This World Ranger Day, let’s say thank you to all rangers standing between our vulnerable ecosystems and the threats that endanger them.
