IWM image set: Second World War, a Holidays at Home campaign

More content ideas here for news desk photo editors and photo feature researchers – the Imperial War Museums photo library have put together a photo set showing how The Ministry of Information in the UK tried to deter people from going on holiday during the Second World War.

IMW say: It is not the first time the British government has tried to deter people from going on holiday. In order to prevent “unnecessary travel” during the Second World War, a Holidays at Home campaign was launched.

The Ministry of Information (MOI) realised the importance of issuing propaganda to maintain morale. A Holidays at Home scheme encouraged local authorities to draw up a programme of amusements for the summer months. The events were designed to save space on trains for troops and keep people at home. The result is a wonderfully nostalgic set of photographs in the IWM Collections.
