Obituary: Rick Strange – predominant travel photographer

Sad news reaches PAN today – stock photographer Rick Strange has died.

His friend and fellow photographer Phil Enticknap sent us this in memory of Rick:

Hi Will,

I received sad news yesterday about the passing of travel photographer Rick Strange who was in is 70’s. His family contacted me as they wanted to inform the industry of its loss.

Rick was an expert in his field throughout the 70’s 80’s & 90’s working mainly for travel companies and shooting stock . He had visited all  continents in his quest and hundreds of countries

He established a world wide network of agencies selling his work and was probably one of the most successful travel photographers of all time.

In the UK he worked exclusively with the photo agency World Pictures previously known as Feature Pix  set up by the late Gerry Brenes and his work featured predominately in the World Pictures collection. A traditional film photographer he continued shooting  well into the 21st century. More lately in recent years he set up his own website World Travel Photographs to sell his work.

With the decline in demand for high end stock images and the resurgence of microstock agencies he slowly began to hang up his cameras and turn his attention to his hobby of collecting and restoring pocket watches. The hobby grew and he set up a website Pocket Watches UK to sell some fine examples of his craft.

Rick who was in good health apart from the normal ageing slowing up process died suddenly on the 2nd September and his funeral was on the 29th.

He was a master of his craft and lived a good life throughout the paramount years of stock photography.

  • I had the pleasure of getting to know Rick, briefly, around June/July 21, and only as far as a pocket watch service customer. While I didn’t get to meet him, we conversed over email. He was a very likeable chap and very passionate about his hobby. I was shocked and sadened to hear of his passing. A big loss even to someone who hadn’t physically met. My deepest condolences to Ricks family.
