Winner: Oli Scarff – Freelance

The judges said: “Highly commended are the freelance, Ian MacNicol and Marc Aspland of The Times. The winner quite simply, entered the standout picture in a very strong category.  It is a montage of faces, emotions and action – captured at on of those quintessentially British events, called the Up’ards and Down’ards in Ashbourne…and this Shrovetide Football has been going on since 1667”

The judges said: “Judging categories like this is always difficult because the standard is always so high. There are some great photographers on the shortlist.  Highly commended are Laurence Griffiths and Clive Rose – both from Getty Images.  The winning portfolio though, was an example of supreme skill, creativity and variety, demonstrating a great technical ability.”
