The UK Picture Editors’ Guild Press Photographer of the Year is Chris Furlong. Furlong collected his trophy last night at a black-tie event at the headquarters of the Honourable Artillery Company in City Road, London.
A panel of picture editors led by former Sunday Times picture editor Ray Wells considered hundreds of photographs submitted by many of the finest photographers working in the media today. Furlong was the winner in the Fleet Street’s Finest Photo Essay, Highly Commended in the Fixation News Photographer of the Year category and Highly Commended in the Dave Benett Photos Arts and Entertainment Photographer of the Year category, demonstrating the all-round talent that earned him this prestigious award. He had previously won the News Photographer of the Year category in 2010, and the Photo Essay category in 2015.
The Chairman’s Award for Lifetime Achievement was presented to Ray Wells (above) who was the Picture Editor of The Sunday Times for over twenty-five years.
With its successful return, the Guild added new categories and new sponsors. DMGT joined as sponsors for a new category, Portrait Photographer of the Year, stock photo agency Piemags joined as sponsors of the Business Category and leading industry magazine Professional Photo sponsored the Royal Photographer of the Year category.
German news and sports photo agency IMAGO joined in on an adventure to test the public’s appetite for taking part in a vote for the IMAGO Photograph of the Year. To encourage participation a prize of two tickets to New York courtesy of Norse Atlantic was awarded to one of the voters. By a huge majority the photograph by Press Association photographer Jonathan Brady of Her Majesty The Queen sitting alone at the funeral of HRH Prince Phillip was chosen as the public’s favourite.
