The Duffy Archive – 50 years of popular culture

The Duffy Archive represents the work of (Brian) Duffy, the celebrated British fashion and portrait photographer, whose bold and innovative style and irreverent approach to image-making played a pivotal role in transforming the look and feel of modern photography.

Duffy played a significant role in redefining the visual culture during the Swinging Sixties, bringing a new energy and attitude to British fashion for the top glossy magazines – Vogue, French Elle, Queen, etc. and celebrity portraiture of film stars Michael Caine, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Terence Stamp, authors, artists, and musicians John Lennon, Bowie, Black Sabbath, and many more.

Duffy’s five sessions and three album covers with David Bowie – most famously, the lightning-bolt cover for the 1973 Aladdin Sane album, has become one of the most enduring visual symbols in music history.

Chris Duffy, a talented photographer in his own right, has also contributed a significant body of work to the archive for licensing website, further extending the legacy of the Duffy name and its influence on contemporary visual culture.

Together, the images of Brian and Chris Duffy form a rich visual time capsule, offering insight into the creative revolutions that have shaped photography, media, and style over the past half-century.
