Global news & photo network WENN has announced that it is a sponsor for Theatre Within’s 36th Annual John Lennon Tribute at which music icon Donovan will receive the 2016 “John Lennon Real Love Award.”
The event, which will take place on December 2 at Symphony Space in New York City, is the only ongoing John Lennon tribute concert in North America or Europe officially sanctioned by Yoko Ono.
Funds raised support Theatre Within, the grassroots non-profit behind the Lennon Tribute since 1981. Theatre Within provides free workshops in meditation and a music program for children in John Lennon’s name at Gilda’s Club, NYC for those whose lives have been impacted by cancer.
Donovan, who will perform an extended set at the Tribute dedicated to John Lennon, has a well-known history with the Beatles. In 1968 he accompanied the group on their journey to India, where he taught them a finger-picking guitar style which Lennon used on songs including “Dear Prudence” and “Julia.” Donovan was also among guests invited by the Beatles to Abbey Road Studios to do overdubs for “A Day in the Life”, the finale on their legendary Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album.
Yoko Ono said, “Donovan is a beautiful soul who was positively influenced by John. I think it is lovely that Theatre Within is honoring him with the ‘John Lennon Real Love Award’ and that the Tribute continues to flourish.”
Past performers at the Annual John Lennon Tibute include Jackson Browne, Judy Collins, Debbie Harry, Cyndi Lauper, Taj Mahal, Patti Smith and the late Ben E. King.
Chairman of the WENN media group Lloyd Beiny commented, “When we were asked to become involved in the Lennon Tribute it was a no-brainer. Lennon was the original ‘influencer’ and his & Yoko’s peace campaign still resonates almost 50 years later. Theatre Within do some amazing work and we are proud to able to make a contribution to this most worthy cause”.
