A glamorous evening at the Honourable Artillery company HQ in City Road, London last night saw the crowning of this year’s Shutterstock Press photographer of the year at the UK Picture Editors’ Guild Awards in Association with Shutterstock.

Around three hundred members of the press photography community attended the awards with the trophies being presented by the Labour Party Member of Parliament for Birmingham Yardley, Jess Philips. The evening was hosted by journalist and broadcaster, Kate Silverton.

Toby Melville from Reuters was named as the Shutterstock Press Photographer of the Year after claiming a clutch of awards in three separate categories. Commended in the Iconic Images Royal Photographer of the Year, Highly Commended in the Fixation News Photographer of the Year and Winner of the Canon Sports Photographer of the Year.

The Chairman of the UK Picture Editors Guild Award in recognition of a lifetime achievement was given posthumously to Terry O’Neill CBE (30 July 1938-16 November 2019). Liam Dunaway O’Neill, son of Terry O’Neill and Faye Dunaway was on hand to receive the trophy.

A further Chairman’s Award was given to Marilyn Stafford in recognition of her contribution to photography that has spanned many decades including working as an understudy to Cartier Bresson in Paris in the 1940’s and continues with the Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award.

Alan Sparrow (above) Chair of the UK Picture Editors Guild Awards said “The quality of the work by the press is breath-taking and these image are testament to what good photography can do for the news industry. We should never underestimate the power of good photography in the pages of our magazines, newspapers and online.’’

Over four thousand pictures were entered by more than four hundred photographers. The entries were judged by a team of ten Picture Editors lead by Industry veteran Lee Martin (above). Lee told PAN when we met him a couple of weeks ago: ‘’The quality and variety of work submitted yet again this year was simply staggering there is so much talent out there and the UK really does lead the way. We need to work hard as an industry to make sure all these photographers get the exposure and credit they rightly deserve for their work. ‘’
